Types of Tours

Not every tour is the same product. The right type depends on how much hand-holding you want, how flexible you need to be, and whether traveling with strangers is part of the appeal or part of the price.

Escorted Tours

A professional tour director travels with the group from start to finish. Everything is scheduled: flights, motorcoach transfers, hotels, most meals, sightseeing, and entrance fees. Local expert guides join in each city for the deeper context.

Best for: first-time international travelers, complex multi-country itineraries, anyone who’d rather have someone else solve every logistic.

Operators we book: Globus, Cosmos, Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, Tauck, Collette, Caravan, CIE, Perillo.

Independent Tours

Flights, hotels, transfers, and key excursions are pre-booked and pre-paid — but you set your own pace each day. No tour director, no group, no fixed schedule. Some optional activities can be reserved in advance.

Best for: experienced travelers, couples and small groups who want the logistics handled but the days to themselves.

Operators we book: Pleasant Holidays, SouthWest Vacations, United Vacations, Tara Tours, plus custom independent itineraries on request.

Hosted / Hybrid Tours

The middle ground. A local host is available at each destination for advice, recommendations, and pre-bookable activities, but you don’t travel as part of a group. Hotels, transfers, and select sightseeing are included; meals and pacing are mostly on you.

Best for: travelers who want a safety net of local expertise without the group dynamic.

Operators we book: Monograms by Globus, Image Tours hosted programs, HanaTour USA, and Adventures by Disney’s independent itineraries.

Tour Difficulty Levels

Major operators rate every itinerary by physical activity level. Pay attention to it — a “Moderate” rating from Tauck and a “Moderate” rating from a small-group adventure company can mean very different things. When in doubt, call us; we’ll tell you what the day-to-day actually looks like.

Easy Activity 1

Minimal walking. Suitable for travelers with mobility limitations. Expect well-paved sites, elevator-equipped hotels, short city walks of 30 minutes or less, and motorcoach transfers between everything. River cruises and most luxury escorted tours fall here.

Moderate Activity 2

Standard escorted-tour pace. Walking tours of 1–2 miles on mixed terrain, some cobblestones and stairs, occasional standing for 30+ minutes during museum or castle visits. Most European and Asian sightseeing itineraries are Moderate.

Challenging Activity 3

Active itineraries with hiking, biking, elevation gain, longer walking days (3–5 miles), and uneven trails. Some altitude exposure on Andes, Alps, or Rocky Mountain itineraries. Reasonable fitness assumed.

Varied Options Activity Flex

Multi-pace itineraries where each day offers two or three activity tracks (relaxed, moderate, active). Adventures by Disney and many Tauck Bridges family itineraries use this model so travelers can self-select per day.
